The Arts

Through his ‘artistic creativity’ man appears more than ever in the ‘image of God’.
— Pope John Paul II

Visual and Vocal Arts

At Holy Redeemer, we take pride in our long tradition of cultivating an environment where the arts flourish. Each grade participates in multiple classes a week in both visual arts and vocal music, instilling a love for the Arts in each student.

Strings Class

Beginning in the Fourth Grade and continuing into Fifth, students add Strings Class to their required Arts curriculum. In Fourth Grade the students take violin, and in Fifth the students decide whether they continue with violin or switch to the cello. Each child is fitted and measured with an instrument specifically for them. Many students choose to add private lessons as well. We currently offer lessons in violin, cello, piano as well as voice.

Third Graders in their performance of Portland the Musical!

The Portland Play

A tradition at Holy Redeemer since 2013, each spring we look forward to our Third Graders participating in the performing arts while they put on The Portland Play. Under the direction of Mr. Ralph Nelson (Playwright, Composer, and Director), Portland the Musical! was written in 1996 and tells the story of the founding of Portland and the significant events that have helped shape our city and our HR neighborhood. Students spend the third-trimester using cross-curricular connections in history, math, performance, and visual arts culminating in an evening of celebration for all of the Third Graders’ hard work.

Artists in Residence

Education in, and the practice of, the arts can challenge us to see things from a different point of view. At Holy Redeemer we embrace the arts as an immersive experience. Sponsored by our Parent Club, we regularly invite local community artists into our school so that children can be challenged through different perspectives. These artists have a lasting impact on our students and school as a whole.
